Akon
By Madeleine Marr
Akon is well-known for his Grammy-nominated album, Konvicted. But Freedom, which recently hit stores, has a nicer ring to it.
The Senegal native - real name Aliaune Badara Akon Thiam - is set to go on trial Dec. 17 for his controversial appearance at a 2007 concert.
If you recall, during the Fishkill, N.Y., show, a teen boy was hurt after being plucked from the crowd by a security guard, then hoisted in the air by Akon.
The singer, 35, faces one year and 15 days in jail if convicted of endangering the welfare of a minor and second-degree harassment.
We caught up with the 35-year-old chart topper relieving some stress at Karu & Y.
What can we expect from Freedom?
"It's a huge international record for all ages. The objective was to introduce a new sound to the U.S. club scene and provide music that can uplift the spirits of everyone who's been affected by these difficult times."
Who are your favorite rappers?
"Eminem, T.I., Lil Wayne and 50 Cent."
What is on your iPod now?
"Lady Gaga, Colby O'Donis, Kardinal Offishall and T-Pain. Their music is so fresh and new compared to what's out there."
Do you ever get back to Senegal?
"Yes, it's like home. The most humble people, best food and beautiful landscape. Definitely a place to consider if you plan to visit Africa."
