Top Hat at the Cosford

By Kevin Craft

With each passing generation, the names Fred Astaire and Ginger Roberts become less well known and less significant. But in the 1930's, this dynamic dance pair was arguably the silver screen's best-known commodity, starring in ten films for RKO Pictures between 1933 and 1939.

Of those ten, Top Hat was the most successful, and I believe it is their best work. The film's pacing is impeccable - the dance routines highlight the characters' emotional states without interrupting plot development - and the supporting characters, most notably Helen Broderick, are perfect comic foibles for the main characters.

"American Hardcore" at Sweat Records

The 2006 documentary American Hardcore screens at 8 pm on Monday, September 1st at Sweat Records in Northeast Miami.

The film explores the hardcore punk scene of the early 1980s that featured the music of still relatively unknown bands such as Black Flag, Minor Threat and Bad Brains. These groups pioneered a new punk sound while never breaking into the America's musical conscious. Their music, however, influenced artists such as Nirvana, the Beastie Boys and Red Hot Chili Peppers, and it remains a pivotal, yet underappreciated, chapter of American rock history.

This Week's Screenings (6/23-6/26)

Monday, June 23

This Thursday, as part of its Janus Films Night series, the Upper Eastside Garden is screening Marco Bellochio's 1965 film Fists in the Pocket at 7 pm. This nuanced film about a young man's attempts to rid his grotesquely dysfunctional family of its many afflictions uses perversity and an offbeat sense of humor to implicate Catholic morality and bourgeois family values. Its confident style established Bellochio as a talented and socially conscious filmmaker in a decade when the French New Wave's directors were receiving most of the international film community's attention.
