When the rise of mega-marts put upscale department stores out of business, the department store lunch became an endangered species. So few remember that department store lunchroom cuisine (at Bonwits, B. Altman, et al) was as distinctive as the cuisine of any other sovereign nation. Fortunately, the Ladies Who Lunch experience is still alive at Neiman Marcus’ restaurant, Mariposa. The delicately elegant ritual commences with no plebian bread basket, but warm popovers accompanied by strawberry butter. Next comes a complimentary cup of consommé (a clear broth last seen in approximately 1940). For an equally time-trippy entrée choice, try the chunky chicken salad, which comes with an orange soufflé. And sprinkled around the delicate dessert tart, what else but edible gold dust?
