Sugar Babies, the Senses of Cinema and BRAFF 2008

Sunrise Cinema's Senses of Cinema-Foreign Film 101 series returns this week with three screenings of the 2006 French Film Days of Glory. Set in 1943, this wartime drama tells the story of four North African Soldiers who volunteer to join the French Army but are treated like second-class citizens in the fight against the Nazis. Days of Glory will screen at Intracoastal 8 on May 27, at Sunrise 11 on May 28 and at Mizner Cinema 8 on May 29. Each screening starts at 7:30 pm and will be followed with a discussion hosted by film lecturer Shelly Isaacs.

From Wednesday, May 28 through Saturday, June 1 The Sugar Babies is playing at Cinema Paradiso in Ft. Lauderdale. This documentary examines the moral price the sugar industry extracts from South American countries by exposing how Haitians are smuggled into the Dominican Republic to work in the sugar industry. Director, writer, cinematographer and producer Amy Serrano and Ambassador Armando Valadares will host a discussion after the film's 8 pm premier on Wednesday, May 28. Prior to that screening, a special reception will take place at 7 pm and the film's composer, Bill Cruz, will acoustically perform two original songs from the film.

Screenings for the 2008 Brazilian Film Festival highlight this weekend at the Miami Beach Cinematheque. Three Bloodbrothers screens at 8:30 pm on Saturday, May 31 and Women Sex Truth and Lies screens at 8:30 pm on Sunday, June 1.
