New October Show: Global
FIFI projects is proud to present its first solo show, Global, by artist Sergio A. Fernández.
As a Peruvian artist working abroad, Fernández has always searched for themes that reflect a relationship to his surroundings; wrestling with a position regarding the landscape and the cultural constructs that surround him.
Global explores the seemingly unremarkable spaces created by institutions that appear sterile and seemingly have no specific function or geographical location, as they exist without intervention.
The glow of fluorescent lights, poor acoustics and dry wall are present in buildings across the world, turning them into spatial vacuums that defy traditional notions of purpose and placement; once inside an office building, the weather is always pleasant and the landscape remains painfully similar: 68° to 72° degrees fahrenheit, industrial carpeting, beige technology and artificial plants. Even the activities have been equalized: spaces remain the same, only software changes. yet the images appear almost ominous; foreboding in their vast, cold spaces.
Opening reception October 11, 7pm. Show will run through November 20, 2008.

FIFI projects is proud to present La Vida Real, Wynwood Gallery Walk 7/12/08.
The ominous future of a couple in a tropical setting, sharing their last day together under a foreboding light is glimpsed in "La Vida Real", a video by Emilio Valdes.
The piece, 55 minutes long, hints at dark secrets under the palm trees and a goodbye for reasons unknown.
An atmospheric story told using Havana as a background, the video was produced by the Positions In Context Grant Program of CIFO (Cisneros-Fontanals Foundation) in 2007.
ORIGINAL TITLE “Who am I arriving at my parent's home lonely, wasted, and wearing a black leather jacket at dawn on a Saturday?”
